Halloween snacks

This morning, I hopped out of bed and made a few snacks for work. I cut up apples and jabbed in slivered almonds as teeth. I also made a bunch of eyeballs and spiders out of divinity candy and pretzels & lifesavers. Nothing fancy, but figured I would snap a photo. Not bad for a little over an hour's worth of work. I particularly thought the spooky mouths turned out well.

Happy Halloween!

What a beauty!

After a couple mile walk around the Ocmulgee National Monument today with my friend Bonnie, I was hoofing it up the hill to my truck, when I came across one of my favorite native bushes...especially in the fall of the year.

The American Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) is dripping with purple berries this time of year.

Back to work tomorrow!

River Clean Up

I spent the day today with a dozen or so friends, gently paddling down the Ocmulgee River, slowly filling our boats with all manner of trash. We usually do one or two clean ups on the river each year. We got out lots of cans, a few pieces of glass, a few toys, a barrel, a grill, and other odds and ends. I do have to admit that the river was cleaner this year than in the past....but it still has a long way to go to be "pristine".

One funny thing that happened: We put in the river and this dog jumped in the river and started following us. We tried to get it to go back to the starting point, but she would not. Eventually, she followed us so far down, that there was no way that she possibly could swim against the current back to the put-in location. So we fished her out of the river and took her with us. She was not a good canoe dog....she liked to lean from one side of the boat to the other. She spent the entire day with us. At the take-out, we put her in the back of my truck and took her back to the place upriver where we started and we first met her. I am sure the other dogs in the neighborhood won't believe her if she tells them about her adventure!

Vegetable Korma

Earlier this month, I went by my favorite Indian restaurant (ok, so it is just about the only Indian restaurant in town) and tried something new to my palate. Previously, I have had the chicken korma (sliced chicken in a creamy sauce, served with rice), which I liked....but I was craving veggies. I have had many of the veggie listings on the menu, but have not tried the Vegetable Korma. What was I thinking? It was delicious! While I still think my favorite is the Aloo Ghobi (potato & cauliflower) or maybe some of the panir dishes....but the vegetarian korma was right up there!

I spent some time yesterday online trying to find a recipe that was close to what I had. The closest that I could find was from Manjula's Kitchen. Manjula Jain is a home cook, but has a great recipe site online, as well as a ton of videos of Indian foods on YouTube. I made her version of Vegetable Korma and it was delicious! Below is her how-to video for veggie korma.

Fall Colors

The colors of Fall were on full display, or close to it, at Fort Mountain State Park this weekend in north Georgia. I spent four nights there camping with friends amid the beauty of autumn colors.

Moonrise over the Mountains

The moon rising over the north Georgia mountains was a stunning sight. This shot was taken at the overlook on Hwy 52 between Chatsworth and Ellijay on Fort Mountain, just west of the state park's entrance.

Gone camping

I have headed off to the mountains for an extended weekend of camping. Hope to have a few photos when I return. Have a safe Columbus Day weekend everyone!

Arenal Volcano

I was digging my way through a box of junk in the top of my closet and I came across some slides that I took in 1999 in Costa Rica. I was very excited because I thought that I had lost them. Unfortunately, my exuberance quickly died down when I drug out my trusty slide projector, set up the screen and took a peek. These were the out of focus, bad composition, and generally poor shots. I am still on the lookout for another box that has about 80 of the better quality slides.

Oh well. Here is a shot of me that is slightly out of focus in front of Arenal Volcano in Costa Rica. We hiked up the desolate lava fields by day amid the rumbling and occasional trembling of the volcano...and at night we were treated to red lava flows near the top. But alas, those shots, along with all of my monkey, frog, rainforest, beach, and other such "good" shots are still missing. One day, I will find them.

Sorry for the photo quality. It was a bit out of focus to start with, and I do not have a slide I took a photo of the projection screen. How bad is that?

Wet Kitty

Miss Callie has been out playing in the yard and has got a few fleas on her. So today it was time for a flea shampoo. Always a fun experience for all. Actually, she is very good about it. No scratching or biting...just a few mournful sounding meows.
