I spent the last week at the John C. Campbell Folk School taking a woodworking class, where we built an Appalachian Dulcimer. Mine turned out ok looking, and it sounds fairly good too. I still have a long way to go on my playing....but the instrument looks great. We learned a couple of simple melodies, but the vast majority of the time was spent on construction.
I went with a tulip design on the front for the sound holes, accented with woodburning for the stems and stamens.
If you want to take a class in almost any form of artwork, the folk school is the place to go!
