PhotoHunt - Etowah River Tunnel

's theme this Saturday is "Nautical".

As that I really don't have immediate access this week to the major waterways, I am going to take it down a notch and go with a smaller boat...my kayak! And just to be even a little more weird, I am going nautical underground!

In his unusual shot, we were paddling on the Etowah River in north Georgia. Back in the goldrush days, they cut an eight foot wide tunnel through the mountain to divert the river...in order to get to a gold deposit in the riverbed. Today, about half of the river still flows through the tunnel, and we kayaked through it. Scary, loud, and very dark. The flash from the camera shows the walls and water; but when you are actually there, it is pitch black and all you can see is the pinpoint of light at the far end of the tunnel.

That's a great shot. I love how you see the tip of the kayak and the dot of light at the end of the tunnel. Happy weekend.
